I am in afib all the time now. I am 57 yrs old. Been on all of the heart meds and blood thinners. While in the hospital I had severe reaction to coumadin causing bleeding in my stomach .Have hypothyroid, high blood pressure,etc....About 2 months ago I started having bad reactions to all my meds. I know this because in just minutes after taking them my throat would start closing up,breathing was restricted, hives, dizziness, blurred vision,nausea,...need I go on? In desperation I began weaning myself off all of the meds.I still take lasix and potassium. I am taking taking 1-a- day womens 50+ multivitamin, cinnamon, omega-3 fish oil, and coral calcium.I try to excersize 30 minutes every morning. I have alright days and not so good days.It is just my opinion, but most doctors (mine in particular) are not really listening when I would tell them how I was feeling...like I was out of my mind!I really tried to follow docs orders. I just had to start listening to my own body.I am not ready to give up. Any suggestions, comments would be appreciated.

In my experience, the doctors don't know much about alternative approaches to managing atrial fibrillation. The most important thing is to listen to your own body. Of the things you mention, the potassium, vitamins, and exercise make the most sense, based on my own personal experience. Lasix is a diuretic (makes you urinate), which can lower blood pressure. If this is the reason you're taking it, there are dietary changes you can make that are probably healthier than taking Lasix. Omega-3 fish oil is supposed to be good for the heart, but it can aggravate afib for some people. I would take it in moderation and listen to your body. Also, depending on your diet, you may already be getting enough calcium. Be sure to get enough magnesium. More than anything else I've found, magnesium seems to help tremendously. Good luck!

Hi Sugarcrisp...I too have afib and was told by my cardiologist that omega3 can contribute to afib. I stopped taking it. I would also recommend magnesium. Wishing you blessings. Eileen

I have been taking magnesium orotate for three months and I have had only one small episode of a-fib. When I went to my cardiologist for a checkup eco (ultra sound) he was astounded to discover that the reading was now perfect and that the small leak in the valve had righted itself and reversed. He was very interested in my use of magnesium and took some notes regarding the type. Wonders will never cease. A cardiologist who is prepared to accept that other things work, not just chemical meds! It's worth a try. Good luck everyone.

I am surprised to read about the fish oils as usually they are recommended for any heart problem :( Is it the fish or the Omega 3 and if its the fish would taking Flax oil be preferable? Thanks
