56-Year-Old Man Has Successful Convergent Procedure

Travis Van Slooten |March 21, 2014 | 2 Comments

Convergent ablation is a newer procedure. It’s a relatively intense one, too, since it requires two doctors to perform. But it worked for 56-year old Craig Wilkins of Cary, NC. The ablation procedure differs from typical ablations in more than just the number of doctors that it takes to perform it, however. Traditionally, surgeons, like Dr. Kiser, have created scar pat- terns to disrupt the circuitry that causes atrial fibrillation arrhythmia, while electrophysiologists, like Dr. Mounsey, have performed ablations. With […]

Those Involved In Intense Sports At Higher Risk for Atrial Fibrillation

Travis Van Slooten |March 18, 2014 | Leave a Comment

Usually we think of robust health when we think of endurance sports. After all, popular wisdom says that endurance athletes have the kinds of bodies most people can only dream of. But a recent study suggests that too much intense exercise can actually put you at risk for a-fib. But recent medical evidence suggests that long-term aerobic activity does indeed cause problems with heart function in some people. Avid cross-country skiers seem especially vulnerable since those athletes use both arms […]

Is The Risk of Bleeding From Pradaxa The FDA's Fault?

Travis Van Slooten |March 14, 2014 | 2 Comments

On the surface, Pradaxa seems to have a lot of benefits that make it an ideal choice over its older cousin, Warfarin. But it hasn’t replaced Warfarin altogether because of the high rate of excessive bleeding that comes along with the drug. Both drugs do have that risk. But Warfarin has countermeasures which Pradaxa lacks. And doctors can reduce the dosage for Warfarin patients to try to reduce the risks. The FDA’s decisions did prevent Pradaxa users from pursuing a […]

45-Year-Old Nurse Cured of Atrial Fibrillation After Ablation

Travis Van Slooten |March 13, 2014 | Leave a Comment

Here’s another awesome success story about someone who received ablation and has essentially been cured from a-fib and all of its associated complications. Check out the video below. Note that, as with many of these other success stories, how the ablation surgery has allowed Melissa Finney to live a full, normal life once more. Medication had not been particularly helpful to her before the doctors tried ablation. Ablation isn’t 100%, but I’ve been finding more and more stories just like […]

Cryoablation Cures 63-Year-Old Woman of Atrial Fibrillation

Travis Van Slooten |March 11, 2014 | 3 Comments

Michelle Novogradac had undiagnosed afib for nearly a decade. Her symptoms were chalkd up to stress. The doctors didn’t figure out that afib was the issue until she had a seizure. Nobody’s sure if afib caused the seizure or not. As happens with many afib patients she was placed on Pradaxa to help control the risk of stroke. Michelle also tried to change her lifestyle in order to manage her condition. None of it was particularly effective. Here’s what happened […]
